YOUNG Toongabbie mother Lizel Antonio fears she and her three-month-old baby will be forced to leave Australia.

Mrs Antonio, her husband Michael both 30 and from the Philippines and their son Marx face an uncertain future.

She came to Australia seven years ago, graduated in nursing from the Australian Catholic University and works for MacKillop Aged Care.

But the Migration Review Tribunal has rejected the Antonios’ application to stay in the country.

‘’I have a permanent job here, but what’s the point of my studying seven years in Australia if they’re going to send me back?’’ Mrs Antonio said.

‘’If I go back to the Philippines I can’t get a job straight away because everything there’s in crisis.

Scientists Develop Gene Therapy For Effective Treatments For Genetic Disorders And Cancers

Scientists in Australia
have developed a new gene therapy vector that uses the same machinery as viruses to transport their cargo into cells.

David Jans, from the Nuclear Signaling Laboratory at Monash University in Victoria, says that this achievement has raised the hope that one day therapeutic DNA will begin to be transferred to a cell’s nucleus far more efficiently than in the past, and thus there will be more effective treatments for several genetic disorders and some types of cancers.

There are more than a million of them and they pose one of the greatest social and environmental challenges to Australia’s outback.

They munch their way through desert vegetation, further denuding this arid nation’s heartland and threatening its sensitive ecosystem. They damage Aboriginal communities in their search for water, fracturing pipes and knocking air conditioning units off walls. And their population is more than doubling every eight to nine years.

The camel – which was introduced to Australia in 1840 to help transport heavy goods to the remote interior of the country – has now become one of its greatest pests. Dealing with the alarming population growth of one-humped Camelus dromedarius has been vexing governments, conservation bodies and scientists for years.

Australia warns China on spy case

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned that China has big economic interests at stake in the case of a mining executive accused of spying.

He said the matter was being watched closely from abroad.

Mr Rudd has been under pressure at home to be more assertive with China, to better protect the detained Australian citizen, Stern Hu.

Two more attacks on Indians Down Under

There have been two more attacks against Indians in Melbourne. While a student from Hyderabad was mugged, an Indian taxi driver was attacked by passengers.

Earlier, a 20-year-old youth from Hyderabad was badly punched on the face.

M A Khan, pursuing hospitality course from Victoria Institute of Technology, was walking near a railway station in eastern suburb of Melbourne on Sunday evening when two Caucasian men, wearing hooded jackets, walked-up to him and punched him without any provocation.
